Unlike the iPad Pro with Face ID, or the iPad Air and iPad mini with Touch ID mounted in the power button, the renders show a Touch ID home button on the front of the next iPad. Even so, one big design element won’t be changing, it seems. It seems likely to me that Apple will increase the size by shrinking the bezels and putting a 10.5-inch screen here, similar to an earlier version of iPad Air. Apple has gently increased the screen size on the iPad from its original 9.7-inch display to its current 10.2-inch size. On the other hand, it looks like the tablet will have a bigger display. But the renders show there will be right-angle-sharp corners to the screen. Either the new iPad will have the magnetic connector and the first-gen Pencil is history, or it will continue to be only compatible with the entry-level tablet, as it is now. Now, back to those revelations about the next iPad.
Apple never releases this kind of information ahead of time, but it seems clear to me that the iPad and iPad Pro are two months off, at least. If we can be sure of anything, then, it’s that this indicates the new iPad hardware will not be released until October this year, not September as it was last year. Of course, distinct though they are, there are many ways the iPhone and iPad overlap, so delaying new features common to both, such as unsend and edit-after-sending for Messages and Mail, could be confusing.Īlthough what seems to be the primary reason for the delay (a need for more time for Stage Manager) only affects the iPad Pro and iPad Air, a later release will affect all iPad users, including those of the new entry-level iPad described below.
